FitLab Deep Creek Lab Lessons 3:25 Keep Us Moving

LabLessons from FitLab Deep Creek.

Keep us moving.

The Labs would like their human staff to get them outside and moving EVERY day. As long as the weather conditions don’t put them at risk, we are happy to accommodate them. When weather conditions are unsafe for dogs and/or humans, the Labs settle for enrichment activities at home. Basic training. Learning tricks. Following humans around through the household chores. Making movement part of your dogs’ lifestyle is good for their mental and physical health.

Move more. Move often. Moving with your dogs is good for them…and for you!

FitLab Deep Creek Lab Lessons 2:25 Things change. Keep moving.

Things change. Keep moving.

Recently, we’ve had enough snow on the ground to change the way the 2-legged members of the Fit Lab want to move. But we recognize that the Labs need their daily hikes. So the humans have adapted by wearing snowshoes. Because movement is a lifestyle for the Labs and the humans. Plus, tired Labs are happy Labs.

Move more. Move often. When things change, find ways to keep moving.

FitLab Deep Creek Lab Lessons 1:25 Make Time for Recovery

LabLessons from FitLab Deep Creek.

Make Time for Recovery.

The Labs ALWAYS want to Move More. Especially on cold, snowy days. However, their humans recognize the value of an active recovery day (an “easy” day). So we build rest days and active recovery days into their movement plan.

Move more. Move often. Whether you have 2 legs or 4, make time for rest and recovery in your movement routine.

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 51:24 Thanks for Keeping Us Moving

LabLessons from FitLab Deep Creek:

Thanks for Keeping Us Moving.

Today’s Lab Lesson is a message TO the Labs: thanks for helping us make movement part of our lifestyle. When Ben got his first Labrador, he cut back on organized racing. He realized he’d rather spend more time on trails with dogs than traveling to various races. (Nothing against racing; this was Ben’s personal choice). Ben may be moving more slowly, but he’s having fun in the woods with the Labs. Dog walks may lack the speed of race training, but they offer consistency. Too many rest days = crazy Labs! This holiday season, we’re grateful to the labs for keeping us moving…even when wintry weather or a cracked rib makes us want to stay home.

Move more. Move often. If you’re lucky enough, move with dogs.

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 46:24 Move When You Can

LabLessons from FitLab Deep Creek:

Move When You Can.

Sometimes “life” gets in the way of our movement plans. Emergency home repairs. Extra meetings at work. An illness or injury. When your movement routine gets derailed, remember that some movement is almost always better than no movement. You don’t need to crush your movement goals every week. Make as much time to move as you can, then get back to your routine when your schedule allows. Focus on the big picture of making movement part of your lifestyle.

Move more. Move often. Move when you can.

FitLabDeepCreek promotes #movementisalifestyle with a weekly movement tip & a Labrador LessonThis week the Labs remind us It’s Not All About the Pace

Our Movement Tip: Don’t Be Afraid To Move

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 44:24 It’s Not All About the Pace

LabLessons from FitLab Deep Creek:

It’s Not All About the Pace.

The Labs make movement part of their lifestyle. They focus on moving rather than on pace, distance, or Strava leaderboards. In fact, the Labs aren’t even ON Strava…in part, because we don’t let them have computer access. Even if you ARE on Strava, it’s ok to enjoy moving at various speeds. Listen to your body. Take time to enjoy the scenery or a slower Sunday sniffy walk.

Move more. Move often. Enjoy your movement, whether fast or slow.

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 43:24 Fall Fun for 4-Legged Friends

LabLessons from FitLab Deep Creek:

Fall Fun for 4-Legged Friends.

Fall is full of festivities…pumpkin patches, corn mazes, BBQs, craft fairs. Many of these festivities are not pet-friendly (do your research beforehand). Make time in your Fall Fun for activities with your dogs. Take a hike. Play outside. Enjoy the cooler temperatures and Fall foliage. Remember: dogs love Fall too…and they want to spend time with their humans.

Move more. Move often. Include your dogs in your Fall Fun.

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 42:24 On a Short Leash

Lab Lessons from FitLab Deep Creek:

On a Short Leash.

We now spend more time on single track trails than we do on wider trails (rails-to-trails, paved trails, etc…). The Labs and humans love hiking in the woods. To make sure we all stay safely on the trail, the humans have purchased shorter leashes (3 feet for Abbie and 4 feet for Puddin). The Labs still have space to sniff and explore, but they’re less likely to drag the humans off the trail (or down a hillside).

Move more. Move often. Find a leash that meets your needs.
