Podcast: Three Rivers Rowing Association- Jenn Grieb

The Three Rivers Rowing Association (TRRA) is a membership organization offering rowing and dragon boating programs to anyone living in the Pittsburgh region.  Founded in 1984, TRRA has grown into one of the largest community-based rowing and paddling clubs in the United States.  Its programs serve people of all skill levels from a broad range of social and economic backgrounds, and participants range in age from teenagers to senior citizens.  TRRA offers lessons for beginners in rowing and dragon boating, and provides coached programs for more advanced rowers and paddlers.  TRRA facilities include two boathouses on the Allegheny River just north of downtown Pittsburgh.  The Lambert Boathouse is located on Washington’s Landing (formerly known as Herr’s Island) and the Millvale Training Center is located on the adjacent river bank.  The boathouses contain weight rooms, locker rooms, training rooms with ergometers (rowing machines), and storage bays holding rowing shells.  The Millvale complex also houses indoor rowing tanks for training purposes.  B hosts several competitive events each year, including the nationally recognized Head of the Ohio Regatta every October.  Jenn Grieb has been with TRRA for seven years; she joined the organization as the Executive Assistant in 2010 and became Executive Director in the summer of 2015.

Podcast: Pittsburgh Hurling, the Pucas- Sean Stayduhar & Aaron Williams

The Pittsburgh Hurling Club (the Pittsburgh Pucas) is a Greater Pittsburgh hurling team and a member of the United States Gaelic Athletic Association (USGAA).  The Pucas were the Midwest Division Champions in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015; they hope to reclaim the title this year (2017).  The Irish sport of hurling, at times referred to as the “fastest game on grass” or the “greatest sport you’ve never heard of,” is over 3,000 years old and combines skills of lacrosse, field hockey, and baseball.  It is a stick (hurley) and ball (sliotar) game, played by teams (of 7, 13, or 15) on a rectangular pitch with H-shaped goals at each end.  The primary object is to score by putting the ball over the bar for a point or driving the ball through the goal for three points.  Irish teams play 15 per side, while most teams in America play 13 per side.  For more information on hurling (and camogie, an Irish stick-and-ball game played by women, that is almost identical to hurling) and to answer the question: What is a puca? Podcast: Ascend- Paul, Alex and Aaron

Ascend Pittsburgh (opening March 2017 in Pittsburgh’s South Side Flats neighborhood) is an indoor rock climbing facility. They offer climbing, fitness, yoga, classes, group events, memberships, and other services. Ascend’s retail shop will provide climbers of all abilities with a wide variety of climbing gear.  Ascend’s Vision (in their own words): We strive to provide the best climbing and fitness experience for our customers. From excellent equipment to knowledgeable staff, our gym will be a top-notch operation. The space will be one that fosters community and belonging, by being more than just a climbing gym: it’s a “third place” where customers can feel just as comfortable as they do at their workplace and their home, and where our customers want to simply be.
As a group of climbers that decided to start a gym, our values reflect a down-to-earth and authentic quality. Our gym is an extension of our love of a good day of climbing with a group of our closest friends that ends with storytelling around a campfire.
We are committed to an active lifestyle. We realize that all around fitness is key to climbing well, which is why we nurture activities like yoga, cross-training, and cardio, and promote smart nutrition and ample rest within our gym and community.
Meet the Ascend Pittsburgh Team
In 2011, Alex, Paul, and Aaron took their climbing partnerships to the next level by joining forces to build a new climbing gym in Pittsburgh, PA. At the time, picking suitable careers was proving to be difficult and we all recognized the need for someone to take Pittsburgh’s climbing scene to the next level. And just like that, the concept of ASCEND was born. To us, it was a perfect union worth devoting our lives to.
Over the years, we gradually learned how to turn our aspirations into a functioning project capable of being integrated into the local business environment. While our initial vision has morphed, we’ve never strayed from our ultimate goal of staying closely connected to the climbing community and help improve upon the foundation our predecessors so graciously provided.
We may not be sponsored athletes or industry veterans, but we’ve put our hearts, brains, and sweat into building ASCEND. We are dedicated, here to stay, and climbers for life. To learn more about the Ascend Pittsburgh team, go to their website, https://www.ascendpgh.com

Podcast: Explorers Club of Pittsburgh- Ron Edwards

Ron Edwards has a long history with the Explorers Club of Pittsburgh (ECP); he has served as the club’s President since 2015.  He is also an instructor in the ECP’s Mountaineering School, Rock Climbing School, and Backpacking School.  Here’s a little about Ron Edwards in his own words:  In 1995 in the middle of the largest National Park in the United States, Wrangell St. Elias, a former Everest climber, now guide in the small town of McCarthy, Alaska, takes me onto a glacier to introduce me to ice climbing.  In 1996 and 1997 I was able to find a spark in a couple of local peers to help me explore lead and multi-pitch rock and ice climbing. Though the climbing was less frequent than I wished, this period culminated on a successful summit of Mt. Rainier in the spring of 1998 – providing another inspirational leap. The fire smoldered from 1999 through 2000 as early independent life and career trumped all outdoor activity. Once transplanted into the city of Pittsburgh, and surrounded by groups of enthusiasts, I began with a renewed dedication in 2001. It’s been full steam ahead and no looking back since then.  The vertical world is what thrills me; the steeper, the better.  When climbing I enjoy more traditional methods and techniques yet employ all of the most modern gear that is available. I enjoy a strong sense of ethics on all of my climbs, striving to do climbs with style knowing I can never lie to myself. Single pitch, toproping and sport climbing are enjoyable but just training grounds to me. I feel the drive to accomplish great climbs, ones that only one in a hundred climbers will do. My religion is simple – life itself. It’s a race against time, a limited time to accomplish and stave off regret. A probable side effect is the legacy that may be left – one that hopefully inspires the next generation. Or at least results in some pretty damn amazing pictures.
For more information on Ron Edwards, including mountains and rock routes climbed, go to the Explorers Club of Pittsburgh website www.pittecp.org/content/ron-edwards-0
