Movement is a Lifestyle Features 9:20 We Want Your Story

Moving2Live is a podcast about movement and exercise for professionals and aficionados.  We also have Movement is a Lifestyle Features. Each week, we publish a brief highlight of a 2- or 4-legged mover…someone who understands that movement is a lifestyle…not just an activity.  The questions are lightly edited to allow for easy readability.  Click MIAL Features for more info if you want to be featured/know someone who should be featured.

This Week: We Want Your Story – Scroll down for our Co-Founder Ben’s story for Inspiration…and we’re not just looking for human stories…bring us your cat tales, dog diaries, horse lore…you are only limited by your imagination…read Lisa’s profile…then submit a questionnaire for your yourself or your animal friend…

This Week: Ben Reuter

Where do you consider “Home”? Home is what you make of it/where your safe place is. Currently ChezR, which is located in the Pittsburgh area

What are your three favorite movement activities? Hiking/trail running with my labradors, mtn biking and gravel biking/fire road riding

Describe the best vacation you’ve ever taken? Where did you go? What movement activities did you include? I don’t know if it is the best, but one of the best was a few days in Salida, Colorado to visit a friend/mentor and his wife. We averaged 4-5 hours of movement a day. Probably the highlight was being able to summit my first 14er – Mt. Shavano. The most memorable vacation, or a combination of work as the medical director and “play” – for a number of years I was fortunate enough to go on the Georgia Games Torch Run- 7+ days of running and biking throughout the state of Georgia promoting the Georgia Games- best memory was drafting behind a police car going up over the bridge to Saint Simons Island on a Friday rush-hour when the sheriff closed down one entire lane of traffic 🙂 thumbs up

What is your favorite pre- or post-workout snack? Pre-work out – espresso. Post-workout: ice cold water and something salty if the workout was long

What is your favorite thing to eat? Note: it does not need to be healthy. Pizza; espresso; very, very good quality bread

Do you have a movement activity on your “bucket list”? If not, what’s a movement activity/event you’re looking forward to in the next year? Pittsburgh to DC on the Rails-to-Trails in 3 to 4 days and San Juan hut tour in Colorado

What do you think is the biggest obstacle to getting people to move more? Fear…of what other people will think of them or that people will judge them.

What do you feel is the most adventurous movement activity you’ve ever done? Probably the first time I went white water rafting. It was the first time I realized that there was something bigger than me that was in control (i.e., the water)

What is your favorite recovery or self-care practice? Sleep

What is your favorite spot within an hour of where you are currently living? (Bonus points if it is a “hidden gem”) There is a spot in Mingo Creek Park in Washington County, Pennsylvania that has a section of trails through a group of maple trees… It is absolutely phenomenal in the fall – almost as good as an Aspen Grove in Colorado

This Week: Lisa Boksenbaum

Where do you consider “Home”? I have moved a lot, searching for “Home.” I’m not sure that I’ve found it yet. I think home is where you feel a sense of connection and belonging. I’m currently living in the South Hills of Pittsburgh.

What are your three favorite movement activities? Hiking (or just walking on the rails-to-trails); cycling (especially loving my new fat bike (a Salsa Cycles Mukluk)); suspension trainer/bodyweight workouts

Describe the best vacation you’ve ever taken? Where did you go? What movement activities did you include? Tough choice! I’m going to go with a two week trip to London (part-work, part-vacation). I walked EVERYWHERE for sightseeing, museum visits, shopping…and tried out several local Pilates studios and other fitness facilities.

What is your favorite pre- or post-workout snack? Pre-workout snack: homemade energy bites (adapted from a recipe by Kathryn Budig in her book, Aim True). Post-workout depends on the intensity of the workout…sometimes trail mix, sometimes a piece of homemade biscotti.

What is your favorite thing to eat? Note: it does not need to be healthy. A tie: REALLY good ice cream (like Millie’s, which is made in Pittsburgh) or excellent bread, cheese, and wine

Do you have a movement activity on your “bucket list”? If not, what’s a movement activity/event you’re looking forward to in the next year? I have a few: Hiking tour of Scotland and Ireland; learn to ride a horse; and a Rim-to-Rim hike of the Grand Canyon.

What do you think is the biggest obstacle to getting people to move more? A combination of the misperception that movement needs to be expensive and/or complicated to be effective and a fear of trying something new

What do you feel is the most adventurous movement activity you’ve ever done? Hiking Camelback Mountain in AZ…followed by the Go Ape High Ropes Adventure Course in North Park (North Hills of Pittsburgh)…heights are not my favorite thing…

What is your favorite recovery or self-care practice? Massage (although I rarely do it), acupuncture, and snuggling with the cats and Labradors

What is your favorite spot within an hour of where you are currently living? (Bonus points if it is a “hidden gem”) The Montour Trail…not hidden, but definitely a gem….and the newly-cut MTB trails at FitLabPGH HQ

Stacy Sims, PhD- Applied Researcher, Innovator & Entrepreneur- re-release part 2

Moving2Live originally released this podcast episode on June 13, 2018.  As we approach the end of the year and people start considering resolutions for the new year/begin training programs we think this is valuable info to share.

Stacy T. Sims, PhD, is currently a Senior Research Scientist at the University of Waikato after returning to academia from a 6-year hiatus in industry. She is an applied researcher, innovator and entrepreneur in human performance, specifically sex differences in training, nutrition, and environmental conditions.

Prior to being launched into industry, she served as an exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist at Stanford University from 2007 to 2012, where she specialized in sex differences of environmental and nutritional considerations for recovery and performance, specializing in women’s health and performance.  With the unique opportunities Silicon Valley has to offer, during her time at Stanford, she had the opportunity to translate earlier research into consumer products and a science-based layperson’s book written to explain sex differences in training and nutrition across the lifespan. Both the consumer product companies and the book challenged the existing dogma for women in exercise, nutrition, and health outcomes.

Her contributions to the international research environment and the sports nutrition industry has established a new niche in sports nutrition; and established her reputation as the expert in sex differences in training, nutrition, and health.  As a direct result, she has been named as one of the top 50 visionaries of the running industry (2015), one of the top 40 women changing the paradigm of  her field (2017), one of the top four visionaries in the outdoor sport industry (2017), and one of the top four individuals changing the landscape in triathlon nutrition (2017).

A regular featured speaker at professional and academic conferences, including those hosted by USOC, HPSNZ, and USA cycling, she resides in Mount Maunganui with her husband and young daughter.
